September 14, 2019

We are excited to announce that the NJ Spivak group of companies has been acquired by J-AAR.

The directors of J-AAR intend to maintain the strong legacy and traditions of Nick Spivak and his sons, Walt and Jim Spivak, and grandsons Mike and Jim Spivak. The family history runs deep as John Aarts & Nick Spivak were close acquaintances and NJ Spivak was instrumental in the founding of AAROC Aggregates in the late 1980's.

J-AAR is dedicated to building upon the exceptional legacy of growth and diversification established over 35 years ago by the companies’ founder, John Aarts, whose passion for high standards was evident in everything he pursued. This Legacy is shared by the founder and successors of the NJ Spivak Group, and the companies will build on a combined legacy going forward.

As part of the transition, Walt Spivak will remain involved as Vice Chair of J-AAR Limited, and Mike Spivak will remain Operations Manager of Sales and Innovation.

J-AAR is the superior provider of construction products and services in Ontario through an uncompromising commitment to quality, innovation, foresight, integrity, initiative and aggressive performance. We will establish lasting partnerships with each customer and exceed their expectations on every project, every time.

“We are proud to be able to pass NJ and CF to a 2nd generation, family business, with a long history of working with the Spivak Family. We trust that Jonathan, Ryan, and Kevin will carry on the strong legacy of my father.”

— Walt Spivak

We are excited to enter a new chapter in the history of J-AAR, which includes vertical integration into concrete supply and forming, which will continue the legacy of all our team members”

At J-AAR, we take pride in fostering continuous learning and industry collaboration. That’s why we recently hosted the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Grade 1 Certification, bringing together professionals from across the construction sector to enhance their skills, stay up to date with industry standards, and ensure the highest level of quality in concrete construction. A Hands-On Learning Experience The ACI Grade 1 Certification provided participants with the opportunity to undergo practical training and certification exams for concrete field testing. This event is crucial for ensuring that industry professionals are well-versed in proper testing procedures, which play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and durability of concrete structures. Under the guidance of certified ACI examiners and experienced J-AAR Structural Group team members, attendees were able to perform essential tests, including slump tests, air content tests, unit weight measurements, and cylinder preparation for compressive strength testing. These hands-on experiences help reinforce best practices and ensure compliance with industry standards. Strengthening Industry Standards ACI certifications are widely recognized in the construction industry as a benchmark for excellence in concrete testing. By hosting this event, J-AAR Structural Group and Dutch Brothers Ready Mix contributed to the ongoing professional development of industry personnel, reinforcing the importance of quality control and precision in every project. We understand that accurate concrete testing is the foundation of safe and long-lasting structures. Events like these provide an opportunity for contractors, engineers, and technicians to validate their expertise and build confidence in their testing abilities. Commitment to Excellence At J-AAR, we are committed to advancing construction standards and supporting professional development within our industry. Hosting ACI Grade 1 Certification aligns with our mission to promote education, ensure best practices, and elevate the quality of work across all our projects. We extend our thanks to all participants, examiners, and organizers who made this event a success. We look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for training and certification, helping to shape the future of the construction industry.

Investing in the future of engineering means supporting the next generation of innovators. Western Engineering Steel Bridge (WESB) at Western University exemplifies the transformative impact of such support. The 2023-2024 Canadian National Steel Bridge Competition (CNSBC) marked another successful year for WESB, showcasing their dedication, skill, and teamwork. At the competition in Québec City, Québec, WESB achieved remarkable feats, including a team record build time of 13:01 and the fastest deconstruction time. This third consecutive appearance underscored not just numerical growth, with a record 12 team members, but also a commitment to nurturing new talent, with half being first-time attendees. Sponsorship facilitates more than just competition readiness; it fosters a close-knit community of aspiring engineers and cultivates lasting bonds. As WESB looks ahead to CNSBC 2025 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering young talent and fostering innovation. Way to go WESB!
